On the Workbench

Just a quick update as to what I am currently working on. I have been busy with work this week, what with setting up two projects, teaching a class on Tuesday and other things that eat into my precious time I haven't been able to move on with modelling/painting much. However, this is where I am right now.

I did base up another Japanese battalion ready for the Malaya campaign along with four HMGs. I have added the Pollyfilla to the bases of the latter, but the rest of the battalion will have to wait. The battalion is a full size one, which consists of four companies of twelve figures each, including a HQ of twelve figures, making a total of 60 figures! Compare this against a British battalion of 31 figures... Even the Japanese HMGs have four crew rather than the usual three that you find in Rapid Fire! This amount of figures will take some time to wade through, but the resulting games should be worth it.

Also I have been puzzling about the paint scheme for the Roland CII and have decided that I will do it in the classic fish mouth scheme, which includes the fish scales on the body. This design comes as a large decal in this kit, so that will be an interesting challenge! But, it also meant that I was waiting a few days for a bottle of Mr Hobby RLM 76 blue/grey paint to come through the post. It arrived today and I experimented by painting the starboard wing tonight and it seems that it will need a couple of coats as the paint is a bit thin.

And finally, over the last few days I have been gathering material and tools to make some scenery for Square Bashing. I want it to be specific to the game and the rules are specific about the dimensions of the scenery tiles, so I thought I'd make it out of MDF boards from offcuts at my local DIY shop for the strength it offers. The offcuts are as cheap as chips, but I also needed a saw to cut it up to the correct dimensions of 12" x 6" and 6" x 6". I also needed a vice to hold it while I cut it and sandpaper to clean them up afterwards. A couple of trips to The Range and I got everything I needed and cut the first few boards. There will be more on this sideline as it progresses...

I'm sorry there is not much to see in this post, but there should be stuff to see soon! Thanks for looking!

  1. I was going to text you to recommend a jabsaw for cutting MDF but I couldn't remember its name. What sort of saw did you buy in the end?

    1. First I got a hacksaw, which wasn't great, then found a good coping saw which did the job perfectly.
